Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is an approach to treatment which integrates the use of a horse (or horses) as a partner in the therapeutic process. EAP is different from Equine Assisted Therapy in that it is facilitated by a licensed mental health practitioner, who focuses on the powerful relationship dynamics between horses and humans as a tool for growth.
EAP can be used in individual, couples, or family therapy. Benefits may include reducing mood symptoms, addressing trauma history, improving communication, building self-esteem, enhancing mindfulness, increasing confidence, establishing trust, and learning boundary setting. EAP can also be an effective approach for people who are not comfortable participating in therapy in an office setting.
